Get Involved

The OpenNMS Project welcomes people of all skill levels to get involved with OpenNMS. You don’t have to be an expert programmer or a paying customer to participate in the community. Heck, just learning about any barriers you may have to joining the community is a valuable aspect of being part of the community.

People from all over the world participate in the goal of making OpenNMS the de facto network management platform of choice, so at first it might seem difficult to join in. If this is the first time you have participated in an open source community, stick with it and you won’t be disappointed.

The first thing you should do is Get OpenNMS. It is probably not a good use of your time unless you are an OpenNMS user.

Next, subscribe to the opennms-discuss mailing list. Lurk or ask questions – pretty soon you’ll see how it works.

If you get OpenNMS to solve one of your problems, put it on the wiki. Find a bug? Open a ticket in our issue tracker. Want to chat in real time? Use IRC to join “#opennms” on “irc.freenode.net”.

If you are a programmer and want to contribute, be sure to subscribe to the opennms-devel mailing list. Introduce yourself. If you wish to contribute patches, be sure to check out the OpenNMS Contributor Agreement.

Whether you are a programmer or not, let’s go do great things.
