What

The fourth annual OpenNMS Developers' Conference, Dev Jam 2008, will be held in a brand new exotic locale -- the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology (or Georgia Tech) in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

When

Sunday, July 27, 2008 through Friday, August 1, 2008. Please reserve your seat no later than July 18th.

Where

Our meeting space will be in Maulding residence hall. The building is located in the western part of campus. Our meeting space will be a ground-level club room / "sun room" complex that includes a kitchen, bathroom, large-screen TV, foosball and air hockey tables, and a workout room, and opens onto a corner balcony. We will also have access to the study lounges on each of the building's four floors, laundry facilities, and dining facilities in a nearby building. The campus is very walkable, and is also serviced by two free shuttles: the Stinger shuttle covers the entire Tech campus, and the Tech Trolley provides a limited loop of campus as well as access to midtown Atlanta and points beyond via MARTA.

For those wishing to stay close to the action (which we obviously highly suggest and encourage), we have single-person apartment-style dormitory rooms in Maulding, the same building where everything else is happening. The rooms are suite-style apartments, with two or four private rooms sharing one or two bathrooms and a common living area. The suites will be occupied exclusively by Dev-Jam attendees. Each person will be issued both a room key and a suite key.

Our meeting space is on the first floor in the north wing. Our sleeping quarters are on the second floor in the east wing.

Getting There

From Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)

Take the airport train to the terminal and baggage claim area. MARTA rail is the recommended mode of transportation. The MARTA rail station is in the ground transportation area. Board any northbound train (the airport rail station is the southern-most station, so it's impossible to get on the wrong train). Take the train to North Avenue (N3) station, which is located in the AT&T (formerly BellSouth) tower on West Peachtree Street between North Avenue and 3rd Street. Upon exiting the train, continue north through the station, up the escalator, through the fare gate, through the glass doors into the building. The West Peachtree Street exit doors are on your left. Attendees will be provided phone numbers of people who will pick them up at MARTA North Avenue station.

Should you wish to drive or rent a car

It's probably a bad idea -- the Georgia Department of Transportation is currently paving interstates 75 and 85 in downtown and midtown during weekends. Please let us know, though, if you will be driving so that we can get you a campus parking pass, which costs an extra $5 per day. From the airport, follow the signs for Interstate 75 / 85 north. The two interstates join together south of Atlanta and run together through downtown. Take exit 249D; turn left onto North Avenue. At the second traffic light, turn right onto Tech Parkway and then turn right again onto Regents Drive (at the Georgia Tech sign) and then take an immediate left onto Ferst Drive. After passing the Campus Recreation Center, turn left at the bottom of the hill onto 6th Street. There is a gate that will prevent you driving right up to Maulding, but there is parking along 6th Street and elsewhere relatively nearby. The campus parking police are unforgiving, so if you are driving in, please stay in your car until somebody can come out and deliver your parking pass to you. The passes we will be issued are valid ONLY for parking in areas marked for a W29 permit.

MARTA In Brief

MARTA uses a smart-card system called Breeze; kiosks in the rail stations sell short-term Breeze tickets for USD$0.50, and each one-way rail fare costs USD$1.75. Keep your ticket for the duration of your stay, as you can reload it at any Breeze kiosk. The kiosks accept cash, VISA/MasterCard/American Express, and pin-based ATM debit cards. You can transfer from MARTA rail to a MARTA bus for free by tapping your Breeze card as you exit the rail station and again as you board the bus.

As an example, if you want to load one trip for your travel from the airport to the conference, and a second trip for your return travel to the airport, you would buy a breeze ticket ($0.50) and two trips (2 * $1.75) for a total of USD$4.00. Fares are independent of distance traveled, but exit and re-entry through a fare gate requires paying another fare.

Packing and Dressing

• Atlanta gets fairly hot on summer days, and the nights are usually warm as well, so leave that wool suit at home.
• There will be students returning to campus the week we're there, it can be fun to try to blend in :)
• Rain is not unheard of, so pack an umbrella.
• If you like to walk / jog / run, the Tech campus is well suited, with both flat and hilly areas.
• Your towels and sheets are provided, with one exchange included.
• Soap, shampoo, and the like are NOT provided, so pack your own.
• Don't assume that your sleeping quarters will have good wireless coverage. In-room wired Internet access is included, but you'll need to pack your own patch cable.

Cost

If you wish to attend, the cost for the week will be US$1100 (US$1000 before June 25th). This will include a private room (with a shared bathroom with one other room) in a four-room apartment-style suite, Internet connectivity and all meals. Without lodging the cost is US$600 (US$500 before June 25th).

The OpenNMS Group will be covering a lot of the expenses, although there are also sponsorship opportunities.

Sponsorship gets your company logo and a link prominently displayed in the footer of every page on the OpenNMS wiki (with over 40,000 unique visitors a month), as well as inclusion on materials (handouts and banners) during the conference. The link will remain for about one year, until the start of the next conference.

Of course, the higher the level of sponsorship the larger and more prominent the company logo, etc.

Bulletins

Badges -- Not Just for Breakfast Anymore

• Each attendee will receive a name badge at check-in. The only time that it's strictly necessary to wear this badge is at breakfast, so that the Dining Services staff will know to serve you.

Conference Program and Agenda

Dev-Jam is going to be a Java coding festival with many participants from the community, some of the names you will recognize from IRC and the mailing lists.

Bear In Mind

• There will be one other group staying in Maulding, consisting of two children's swim teams. We're assured that the chaperone-to-child ratio of this other group is greater than 1, and our rooms will be on a separate floor from theirs.
