OpenNMS is Network Computing's Project to Watch

"As for features, freeware has good availability monitoring, performance and configuration functionality. Other functions, such as support for transaction applications and service management, centralized common data stores and distributed computing, are nonexistent, with the exception of the OpenNMS project. OpenNMS has yet to catch up to the large enterprise management suites, but it just might surface in 2006 as a serious contender in the management market."

Matrix Japan Becomes First Certified OpenNMS Partiner

PITTSBORO, NC - 8 September 2005: Today the OpenNMS Group, Inc., is announcing that the Matrix Corporation will become the first OpenNMS Certified Partner, and will provide services and support for OpenNMS in Japan.

OpenNMS is the world's first enterprise-grade network management platform to be developed under the open-source model. This application, which can replace expensive commercial solutions such as Hewlett-Packard's OpenView, IBM's Tivoli and Micromuse Netcool, is available for free and is released under the GNU General Public License.

OpenNMS is maintained by The OpenNMS Group, which provides commercial services and support for the application. The OpenNMS Certified Partner program involves specialized training on OpenNMS, and is backed by direct access to the development team at the OpenNMS Group.

"Our goal is to make OpenNMS the de facto management platform standard worldwide," said Tarus Balog, OpenNMS Group CEO. "In order to do that, we are working with a select group of partners around the world to provide end users with support and services options that provide a rapid response in their native language and in their own time zone."

"We are excited about starting this support business in Japan," states Yoshiaki Gunji, CEO of Matrix Corporation. "We look forward to providing a high level of support services to our clients."

The OpenNMS Group currently has customers in ten countries, including Japan. The Matrix Corporation will be responsible for all support in Japan, and has begun by translating the OpenNMS documentation into Japanese.

OpenNMS Wins LinuxWorld Expo Product Excellence Award

PITTSBORO, NC - 9 August 2005 - OpenNMS has won a Product Excellence Award at the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo being held in San Francisco. The open-source network management application was chosen as the winning solution in the "Best Systems Management Tools" Category.

OpenNMS was chosen out of a field that included IBM's Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator, Novell's ZENWorks 7 Linux Management product and Userful's DiscoverStation.

OpenNMS is the first enterprise-grade network management product to be developed using the open-source model. It was designed from day one to be able to monitor tens of thousands of devices from a single instance of the application, and it aims to offer a better alternative to expensive commercial products such as Hewlett-Packard's OpenView, Micromuse Netcool, and IBM's Tivoli. The software is freely available and is supported by an international community of users and developers.

The current development release, known as version 1.3.0, includes enhancements such as support for SNMP version 3, the ability to monitor JMX-based application servers such as JBoss, and improved event management through the use of alarm reduction.

Huge Savings with OpenNMS for Managed Hosting Company

We were very fortunate to have an article about OpenNMS by Maria Winslow published in LinuxWorld this month. Be sure to get your copy!

A nice quote from our buddy Eric:

"When Rackspace Managed Hosting started in 1998 to lease Internet colocated servers to customers, they went with Linux almost everywhere in an effort to keep costs down. In fact, heavy use of Linux was standard in the low-margin managed hosting sector. According to IT manager Eric Evans, "people would be surprised by how much they would save if they went with Linux."

OpenNMS Saves Big:

"The cost savings are huge. Evans looked at OpenView, a proprietary competitor to OpenNMS from HP. But OpenView can cost tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars, depending on the installation. For Rackspace's needs, this product would cost about $200,000-$250,000 just for internal network monitoring and reporting, with $10,000 per year in maintenance costs. To use OpenView for their customers' servers was simply out of the question because the costs were too high. OpenNMS is a comparable open source free network monitoring tool. Rackspace purchases support from Blast Internet Services, the maintainers of OpenNMS, for just a few thousand dollars per year. Overall, the savings are quite dramatic."

OpenNMS Featured at Dell

Joshua Giles has written an article entitled Integrating OpenNMS with OpenManage Server Agent to Manage Dell PowerEdge Servers Running Linux that features OpenNMS.

The author describes the need for network management and how OpenNMS can meet that need while maintaining a low total cost of ownership. His step-by-step instructions for configuring OpenNMS to understand Dell OpenManage SNMP Traps demonstrates how easy OpenNMS is to modify.

The changes Mr. Giles discusses in his article are now contained in the default OpenNMS configuration, starting with version 1.1.1.

OpenNMS Featured on IBM's DeveloperWorks

Author and Consultant Sing Li has written an article entitled Hands-on JMX integration that features OpenNMS (sometimes the link fails, so you can also get the PDF).

The author uses the highly open and extendable OpenNMS architecture to demonstrate how easy it can be to create a custom poller within the system. Thus custom monitoring applications can be rapidly developed without the need to build a completely custom network management system.

The advantages of Java and JMX that allow for such quick development are some of the main reasons OpenNMS was written using them, and why OpenNMS can be the NMS of choice for many enterprises.

The article is also available in Japanese.
